Sony To Develop A Free-To-Play Clone Wars MMO?
The rumor? Sony Online Entertainment has once again partnered up with LucasArts to develop a browser-based Star Wars MMO set in the Clone Wars period. Sony would use the browser-based engine used to power free-to-play MMO Free Realms to develop the game and it would be aimed at a casual audience based on the Clone Wars CGI movie and television series.
Sony’s Free Realms is extremely popular because of its accessibility of being a browser-based game and requiring no fees, boasting over 4 million users. While LucasArts already has the upcoming Star Wars MMO with BioWare, don’t think Sony plans to target the same audience. While there may be some overlap, it would make sense for most of Sony’s playerbase for this game to be casual and younger, the same audience which watches the animated series.
While SOE already has an MMO with LucasArts, Star Wars Galaxies, again, this game would probably not be targeting the same audience that still plays that game. Sony has said they have learned a lot since some of the mistakes they have made with Galaxies and expectation levels may not be as high for a casual game.
What do you think about the possibility of LucasArts having 3 Star Wars-based MMOs at the same time? This information comes from an inside source at Ten Ton Hammer, so take it how you will.
