Bioware Talks About Combat in TOR
Speaking to VG247, Bioware co-founder Greg Zeschuk believes The Old Republic’s combat system needs something more than “swinging through each other” like in many other MMOs today. Instead, the combat system will be choreographed, something that is not seen in most online games.
The Old Republic’s combat system has been built from the ground up, Zeschuk confirms. “Without a doubt…If you recall some very specific things from the gameplay video, it was choreographed.” While we have not seen this gameplay video, we’ll take his word for it.
He went on. “One big difference, especially against the MMO space, is that typically everyone swings through each other. That’s the way it’s been done. It doesn’t look great for Star Wars.”
“Star Wars is choreographed, it’s elegant; it’s big, powerful moves and lightning bolts flashing, but in a way that makes sense visually and aesthetically. One of the goals we have it to create this choreographed type of combat that looks as though it could be taking place in a Star Wars movie.”
According to the article, the gameplay video showed Jedi fighting Sith and the combat was definitely choreographed. Lighsabers clashed and the attacks of one affected the attacks of the other.

Sounds great. Looks like gameplay will not only be fun, but snazzy-looking as well!
ReplyI hope so. The “swinging through people” thing that is common in other MMOs also seems to be common in many other star wars games with lightsabers, where you can take many slashes and still live. I know that lightsabers cannot be one-hit KOs because Jedi/Sith need to be balanced with the non-force classes, but I prefer to see more clashing of weapons and less slashing each other till your health is down, a la The Force Unleashed.
