BioWare has “as good a chance as anybody” says Blizzard Exec
In an interview with EuroGamer Blizzard executive Paul Sams says BioWare has “as good a chance as anybody” with regards to their newly announced MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic. “I wouldn’t bet against them, that’s for sure,” Sams continues, noting that the game is utilizing a “well-known franchise” and thinks that it will help push SW:TOR to success.
However Sams warns that development and a strong franchise are only the beginnings of a successful game. Speaking from his experiences with WoW, especially given today’s release of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, Sams says that maintaining quality in a game of this nature is equally as difficult and building it in the first place. “It’s a bit more tricky than it might seem, and I think that that is also why we haven’t seen any other games that really have blown up from a huge subscribership perspective,” Sams explained, “because how you react when it scales is very challenging, to say the least.”
Sams mentioned that Blizzard itself hadn’t done everything right with WoW, arguably the most popular game of our generation. Sams continued to say it’s a long and expensive road, although with BioWare’s backing by EA the financial hit will be substantially less important. Does this mean Blizzard thinks The Old Republic will a legitimate competitor in the MMO field? Only time will tell, but it looks like Blizzard isn’t taking anything for granted.

As a WoW player it’s good to see Blizzard thinking that Bioware has what it takes. I am hoping that TOR will be better than WoW and that it will make me switch.
